Before contacting IT support, you can try to resolve issues on your computer by following the steps below.

The smart checklist for cleaning your computer

Start by backing up your data

  • Before you start cleaning, make sure you have backed up all of your important data.
  • This will prevent data loss in the event of a problem.
  • Choose your company's cloud over an external hard drive.

Uninstall unnecessary programs

  • Go to the Control Panel, then Programs and Features. Uninstall software that you no longer use or that you don't recognize.

Keep your operating system up to date

  • Make sure the operating system and all of your hardware drivers are up to date. Security and performance updates are critical.

Free up hard drive space

  • Delete junk files, old documents, videos, or photos that you no longer use.
  • Be sure to empty the trash regularly to permanently delete the files you have deleted.
  • A desk full of files can slow your computer down. Organize your files in folders and keep the desktop clean.
  • On a Mac, use the “Storage” application in System Preferences to identify and remove unnecessary files, such as caches, download files, and duplicated items.

Delete temporary files

  • On a PC, use Windows's built-in disk cleaning tool to remove temporary files, cache files, and other unnecessary items.

Disable programs at startup

  • On a PC, in the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the “Startup” tab and disable programs that you do not need to launch when Windows starts.
  • On a Mac, go to System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Items to manage applications that launch at startup.

Scan and remove malware

  • Use an antivirus to scan your computer for viruses, malware, and other threats. Make sure your antivirus is up to date.

Optimize power settings

  • Adjust power settings to improve performance instead of saving power.
  • On a PC, this is usually done through the Control Panel.
  • On a Mac, go to System Preferences to adjust power saving, display, security, and privacy settings to suit your needs.
