The impact of transport in the carbon balance

Our dear Yves is not the only fan of bikes - at Rzilient, we are also good fans. If our trips between home and work represent only 0.1% of our carbon footprint in 2021 (cf. our article on the subject), it's not for nothing!

Note that according to the 2021 Green IT Benchmark, the impact of people's physical flows should not be underestimated. If we take a particular example, that of a CIO:”Consumables and human activity remain impacting components of the environmental footprint of the information system. The kilometers traveled by IT specialists and service providers during their trips between home and work as well as professionals remain the main source of environmental impacts of the IT department, which contributes up to 1/3 of the environmental impacts of the information system.” (Benchmark Green IT 2021)

The transition from rzilient to soft mobility

We are therefore proud to have decided about 1 year ago - when Rzilient existed for just a few months - to develop a soft mobility policy. In an effort to be consistent, and in order to adopt a CSR approach to the end, we decided to offer all members of the team the opportunity to adopt soft and low-carbon modes of transport for their daily commute to work.

Concretely, how did we implement this policy?

We have set a monthly budget per person, and offer 2 alternatives in Barcelona:

  • Coverage of the costs of public transport ;
  • The rental of a bike provided by rzilient, or the assumption of maintenance costs for employees who already have their own bike.

We chose Kleta as a service provider for the simplicity, efficiency and responsiveness of their services - to the delight of the rzilient team, as shown in the video below!

You too, work your calves, switch to the bike 🚴

NB: This action is part of a much broader reflection on the impact of rilient - from the business model above all, to offices and employees in parallel.

As pointed out by Manifesto For an ecological awakening : “What is the point of traveling by bike, when you also work for a company whose activity contributes to the acceleration of climate change or the depletion of resources?”

It is essential to adopt a systemic vision and to combine individual and collective actions, as Thomas Wagner reminds us in his dedicated article.
